It’s Herring Season

A few of our members captured some of the incredible sights that our yearly herring spawn has to offer.

Every spring one of the most incredible reproductive cycles in mother nature happens directly off our island coasts. Pacific herring find their way back to home waters and begin spawning in the protected inlets and coastal waters of BC. Females can lay up to 20,000 eggs in the near shore fertilized waters. These eggs stick to everything they come into contact with; adhering to kelp, rocks, and submarine debris. Animals from all types and as far away as the tropics find themselves here during peak spawning in March. It is a fundamental and important part of our coastal ecosystem and much depends on it. Steller’s Sea Lions, Gulls, Eagles, and Fisherman all gather for the feast. A few of our members captured some photos of this incredible process and sights like this are just another benefit of being both a flying and non-flying club member.
